Malta Beaches – Blue Grotto

Rating: ★★★★☆

Wied iz-Zurrieq - Boat Departure Station for Blue GrottoMore known for its main attraction, the Blue Grotto, the village of Zurrieq, also offers visitors a chance to swim. There are in fact a few facilities for swimmers, as well as a few bars and restaurants where to rest. With this said, it’s also true that the place is nothing too speactacular as a beach, and it’s much more reccomended for the chance you have to get into a luzzu (Maltese colored boat) and get closer to the magnificient caves in the area. Actually all of the boat traffic makes it quite dangerous for swimmers. At any case, just make sure you get there early in the morning, or you risk of finding yourself starring at boat oil reflections in the water, rather than natural light effects. Weather conditions permitting, boats run in fact all day long.

Malta Beaches – Anchor Bay

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Anchor BayAnchor Bay is a small bay located approximately one km west of the village of Mellieha, which was named after the countless anchors which have been found in the bay. Nowadays it’s mostly known for Popeye Village, which was used as the set for the 1980 Hollywood musical Popeye, starring Robin Williams as Popeye.
The bay itself is quite isolated and not very popular, either with locals or tourists. Water is clear though and sea conditions are usually adequate for swimming. It’s an even better location for divers, because of the many caves. Although not famous for it, it might give snorkelers a good chance to spot some fish.
