Malta Beaches – Anchor Bay

Rating: Anchor Bay is a small bay located approximately one km west of the village of Mellieha, which was named after the countless anchors which have been found in the bay. Nowadays it’s mostly known for Popeye Village, which was used as the set for the 1980 Hollywood musical Popeye, starring Robin Williams as Popeye. The bay itself is quite isolated and not very popular, either with locals or tourists. Water is clear though and sea conditions are usually adequate for swimming. It’s an even better location for divers, because of the many caves. Although not famous for it, it might [ ... ]

Malta Beaches – Ghadira Bay, Mellieha

Rating: Malta’s largest sandy beach is located on the north-easter part of the island, within the city of Mellieha. It is very popular, especially for families (both among tourists and locals) and is very easy to be both located and accessed. It can get a little crowded, especially during summer on weekends. There are facilities such as bars, cafes and supermarkets. There are also water sport facilities where you can hire beach equipment, floating devices or even try parasailing. There are of course also many sun beds and umbrellas available for rent. Tweet This Post

Malta Beaches – Blue Lagoon, Comino

Rating: On the Island of Comino you can find the sheltered inlet known as the “Blue Lagoon”, whose stunning blue waters have transformed it into one of Malta’s premier attractions. It can be reached by boat only, either from Gozo or Malta. It’s suggested to get there early, as the place becomes VERY busy with tourists during the later hours of the day. Tweet This Post

Malta Beaches – Sliema Seaside Rocks

Rating: Although there are no sandy beaches in Sliema, right close to its center, there are coastline rocks which offer a good opportunity to sunbathe, swim and snorkel within the city. Metal handrails give safe access to water to bathers and alternative swimming and sunbathing is offered by seafront lidos, both on Tower Road and on Qui-Si-Sana, the point of the peninsula. Malta Beaches – Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

Rating: Ghajn Tuffieha is Golden Bay’s sister beach. It’s in fact also located in the north-western part of the island, just a couple hundred meters away from it. It’s easy to be reached, but not so to be accessed, since there’s quite a lot of climb down to do (over 100 steps). It’s popular among couples and young people, local and tourists alike. Please note that, although such practice is technically illegal in Malta, there might be nude sunbathers sometimes. It’s usually not as crowded as its sister, but nevertheless it also offers certain facilities (cafe, restaurant). A cold drink [ ... ]

Malta Beaches – Ghar Lapsi

Rating: Għar Lapsi (meaning Ascension Cave) is a small rocky bay, located close to Dingli, 1 km north-west of the Blue Grotto. Here it’s possible to swim within a sheltered rocky inlet (basically a natural swimming pool), which, on calm water days, is actually also a great place to snorkel or for diving practitioners. There’s no real beach there, but it’s possible to sunbathe on the concrete terraces surrounding the inlet. There are a bar (also serving sandwiches and hot dishes) and a bigger restaurant nearby. Malta Beaches – Ramla Bay in Gozo

Rating: Ramla Bay (Ir-Ramla il-Ħamra in Maltese) is a sandy beach, located on the north-eastern side of Gozo, one of the three Maltese islands. Its sand features a distinctive golden-reddish tint, from which it’s inherited its name. The beach is very popular with both Maltese residents and tourists, and can be reached by either car or bus. It’s ideal for sunbathing and swimming, but it’s wide enough that some beach sport activities can be performed as well (it’s indeed suitable for families). It’s easy to be accessed (even though you have to expect to walk a little, or rely on [ ... ]

Malta Beaches – Golden Bay

Rating: Golden Bay’s of the most popular Sandy beaches of Malta. It’s located in the north-western part of the island, overlooked by the Radisson Blu hotel complex. It’s popular among families, but also couples or tourist groups. It’s very easy to be reached and accessed, and offers all the facilities you might need (cafe, restaurant, umbrella/water sport hire) for a day full of fun at the beach. It’s usually safe for swimming (thanks also to the common safe buoys, very common in all Malta beaches), but it is prone to strong currents when the wind blows from the north-west. A [ ... ]
